Electricity theft is a costly and growing problem for utilities around the world. As theft rates continue to rise, utility operators are establishing stringent smart meter system requirements designed to eliminate tampering and protect revenue.
One common method of stealing electricity involves using an external magnet to tamper with a smart meter so that the meter undercounts or stops working altogether.

India is the world's third largest producer and fourth largest consumer of electricity. Despite this the country is being mostly served with electromechanical meters or digital meters with optical port being the only communication interface. Smart metering projects are scattered across the country and are mostly based on P2P GPRS, generating high monthly operational costs or proprietary RF solutions, which create vendor dependence for the DISCOs.

According to Energypress.gr, the bid of Intracom Telecom for a project of 200 000 meters had the lowest price on the opening of bid envelopes on Friday 4th of November. The first 10 000 meters will be delivered in 9 months after the contract signature, then the remaining meters will be deployed in 15 months.

EVN Macedonia, the sole electricity distribution operator in FYROM, continues its smart metering deployment program reaching this year 347 transformer substations and around 35 000 consumers.
EVN Macedonia started it smart metering program with a proof of concept in 2011 in order to understand the cost/benefit, given that unlike in other European countries, the investment into it is not compensated by the government.

ADD BULGARIA, ADD GRUP’s partner in Bulgaria, inked a major deal with EVN Bulgaria for the delivery of 550 000 smart electricity meters based on PRIME technology. The project will span over the next four years, with the first delivery planned till the end of 2016.
For EVN Bulgaria this project is especially important as by the end of the project, 80% of all meters in its network will be with remote reading .
