Solving the water crisis on Greek Islands using ADDRA smart water meters

On many Greek islands, such as Naxos and Karpathos, local authorities face an acute water shortage. Reuters reports that the main reservoir on Naxos has almost dried up due to the summer heat, threatening local agriculture. Authorities in Karpathos have already imposed restrictions on water use for filling swimming pools. In several other places, the possibility of installing seawater desalination plants is being considered to cope with the shortage. Most of Greece has not had significant rainfall for several months. The dry spring and summer followed the warmest winter on record. This challenging situation is exacerbated by the massive influx of tourists, which significantly increases water consumption.

Unlike existing solutions, which involve imposing restrictions on freshwater consumption and using saltwater for irrigation, ADDRA meters with valves allow for effective management of freshwater supply to consumers. The use of saltwater for irrigation can harm agriculture and ecosystems, whereas ADDRA meters provide the opportunity to rationally use limited freshwater resources.

The meters track the consumer’s allocated limit and, upon reaching this limit, command the valve to close, completely cutting off the water supply. The valve reopens the next day, and the monitoring and control process begins anew. ADDRA meters will help authorities reduce water consumption, ensure fair distribution, and most importantly, eliminate the need to use seawater. Instead of a solution where everyone lacks water, with ADDRA, we provide water to everyone 24 hours a day, albeit with individual limitations.

The advantages of the ADDRA system include:

  • Reduction of overall water consumption: ADDRA meters help authorities reduce water consumption by ensuring control and compliance with established limits. This promotes more rational use of water resources.
  • Support for sustainable resource use: The use of ADDRA smart meters contributes to more efficient water resource management, which is especially important in drought conditions and limited water supply. This helps preserve water resources for future generations.
  • Minimization of costs: The ADDRA system helps reduce expenses on renting water trucks and other temporary measures, providing a long-term solution for water supply control and management.

The ADDRA system offers a solution that allows all residents and tourists to have access to water throughout the day while effectively managing limited water resources. This is especially important in the current water crisis faced by the Greek islands and other regions.
