Energa Operator: Data from smart meters helps in reduction of losses

This year Energa Operator has conducted a research in order to show the significant potential of smart grid solutions for reduction of technical and commercial losses, thus studying the possibilities in Kalisz and Hel Peninsula (Poland).

In Kalisz research indicates that 12 months after implementation of the system, losses we’re reduced by 10 % in comparison to the previous year. In order to reduce commercial losses, a number of measures were implemented, measures as limiting illegal consumption, reducing the amount of energy consumed by the metering system, increasing the efficiency of meter readings and reduction of technical losses.

In Hel Peninsula Energa Operator examined the possibility of reducing technical losses and deployed a pilot project in the smart grid sector. The research during peak load (summer season) indicated on the possibility to reduce technical losses by 9%, only by optimizing the network.

Increased monitoring and automation of the networks are one of the main features of Smart Grid solutions. – noted Adam Olszewski, director of the Department of Innovation at Energa Operator. – New features and solutions in the area of Smart Grid will be a very important element to optimally and efficiently manage the distribution network. As our studies show, the implemented systems within smart grid allow the effective reduction of losses and we have strong reasons to assume that we’ve achieved promising results, which are reproducible.
