ADD GRUP to deliver 115 000 smart water meters to ABC Naples

ADD Grup congratulates and nominates its strategic partner in Italy, Idea Srl, for winning the tender to supply and install 115,000 residential smart water meters in Naples.

The implementation of advanced metering infrastructures and digital technologies in water metering processes in Naples will totally change the monitoring and management of water consumption. Through the adoption of innovative solutions, such as real-time monitoring and remote data collection, customers will now have access to comprehensive insights into their water usage patterns, promoting better conservation practices and cost management. The automation of meter reading and billing processes will not only minimize errors but increase the operational efficiency as well, laying the groundwork for a more sustainable and resource-efficient future.

The key project goal is to install smart water meters and remote reading infrastructure in Naples.

No more manual readings or guesswork – everything will be getting easier and more streamlined!

Another specific project goal is to enhance anti-burglary measures. Through the utilization of advanced smart metering system, the capability to remotely monitor the water consumption pattern appears, thereby enabling the detection of any unusual spikes or irregularities that could signal a potential break-in. Furthermore, the analysis of data collected by smart meters can provide valuable insights into the timing and techniques utilized by burglars, aiding in the prevention and investigation of burglaries.

The project set high demands on the equipment to be applied for the project implementation.

The smart ultrasonic ADDRA water meters produced by ADD Grup were selected because of some unique features, distinguishing them from the items of competitors, overscoring and exceeding the highest demands of project specifications. That has become decisive to award contract to our partner:

  • High accuracy level. The accuracy level of water meters is measured by formula R=Q3/Q1 where R (accuracy) is a ratio of the permanent flow rate (Q3) to the minimum flow rate (Q1). Higher “R” Ratio increases the sensitivity of the meter for measuring low flow rates. Our ADDRA smart ultrasonic water meters state the R800 sensitivity, providing the sensitivity of 1 liter per hour. With this accuracy, our water meter has reached one of the highest points to win the project.
  • Hybrid communication model. The project specified the need in both long-range and short-range network connectivity for remote data transmission. For ADDRA water meters, ADD Grup has developed the mixed communication solution – Dual stack LoRaWAN + Wireless MBus to combine LoRaWAN with short-range Wireless M-Bus, which will allow utility to read meters by drive-by / walk-by. Both LoRaWAN and Wireless M-Bus communication channels will work simultaneously. In other words, water consumption data will be read out by drive-by / walk-by if the Lorawan signal is not available.
  • Brass measuring tubes. Brass is a highly durable material that can withstand the rigors of everyday use in water meters. Unlike composite tubes, which can crack or break under pressure, brass measuring tubes are built to last, ensuring long-term reliability and accuracy.  Brass measuring tubes provide precise measurements of water flow, allowing for more accurate billing and monitoring of water usage. Composite tubes, on the other hand, may be prone to expansion or contraction, leading to inaccuracies in measurement. Brass has excellent temperature stability, meaning that brass measuring tubes will not expand or contract significantly with changes in temperature. This ensures consistent and accurate measurement of water flow regardless of environmental conditions.
  • Shut-off valve. The control shutoff valve is an essential component in large smart water metering projects, playing a crucial role in managing water flow and ensuring efficient operation. This valve is instrumental in regulating the supply of water, allowing for precise control over its distribution and conservation. Utilizing the control shutoff valve enhances precision in monitoring water usage and helps prevent issues such as leaks or wastage. By incorporating advanced technology, such as remote control and real-time data monitoring, into these valves, the efficiency and effectiveness of the water management system are significantly improved, aligning with the project’s sustainability goals. A well-designed control shutoff valve not only optimizes the operations of a large smart water metering project but also reinforces the reliability and performance of the entire water infrastructure, making it a vital component in ensuring a successful and sustainable water management system.
  • Extended battery life. Extended battery life in a large smart water metering project holds significant meaning and importance. With extended battery life, the smart water meters can function optimally for longer durations without the need for frequent battery changes, reducing downtime and ensuring consistent monitoring and management of water usage. Meanwhile the project specification set up a lifespan under real operating conditions of not less than 13 years, our ADDRA smart water meters are equipped with batteries, providing in average the 16-year-battery life.
