ADDRA: Solving Mallorca’s water crisis with smart water meters
During the peak tourist season at one of Spain’s most popular resorts, Mallorca, strict water supply restrictions are being imposed. Amid a drought that significantly worsens the water supply situation, city authorities are forced to take drastic measures. Following the water crisis and the complete restoration of the municipal network, tankers can no longer guarantee the minimum water supply for the population during the summer, when consumption peaks, as stated by the city hall.
From July 15, 2024, the water supply will be shut off from 11:00 PM to 4:00 PM, leaving residents and tourists without water for 17 hours a day. Daily consumption per person should not exceed 75 liters. Moreover, the use of drinking water for washing cars, filling swimming pools, water tanks, and watering plants will be prohibited. The economic situation in the Balearic Islands is difficult, and the authorities can no longer afford to spend money on renting water tankers. These measures will remain in effect until the situation improves and a new well is built.
To ensure control over water resources, we propose an alternative solution to the current problem using ADDRA smart meters with a valve.
