Addra smart water meters: The first large-scale project in Greece

This year, in Greece a large-scaled project for the supply of smart water meters equipped with shut-off valves launched.

The project takes place in the Municipality of Mandra – Idyllia (located in the region of Attica) and executed by TREK Development SA using smart ultrasonic ADDRA water meters by ADD Grup.

Project goal

A key problem in the project area is the lack of remotely-readable water meters installed in the existing network infrastructure. That was a problem for accurate and timely billing.

The main objective of this project is the supply and installation of over four thousand smart water meters equipped with shut-off valves in certain cases, to monitor and manage consumption, leaks, breaks and unauthorized interventions.

Another goal is the remote and real-time quantitative control of consumption, rational management of all water supplies to end consumers, continuous monitoring of the water balance, active detection of network losses as well as direct control and mitigation of faults in the internal network.

Key advantages of Addra smart water meters, for which they were selected for this project:

Smart ultrasonic ADDRA water meters equipped with shut-off valves have some unique features, distinguishing them from the items of competitors, by which they were selected by project authorities:

  • Remote monitoring and control of water flow. This enables real-time tracking of water consumption, detection of leaks, and the ability to remotely shut off water supply in emergency cases.
  • Cost savings. By accurately monitoring water usage and detecting leaks early on, ADDRA helps in reducing water wastage and lowering utility bills for both consumers and water providers.
  • Improved customer service. With the ability to remotely monitor and control water supply, water providers can offer better customer service by quickly addressing any issues such as leaks or disruptions in supply. This leads to increased customer satisfaction and loyalty.
  • Hybrid communication model. Due to the morphology of project area, long distances must be covered with a metering network while no communication infrastructure is available. Specifically for similar projects and faster implementations, ADD Grup has developed the mixed communication solution based on LoraWan frequency and wireless M-Bus for its smart water meters when LoRaWAN can be combined with short-range Wireless M-Bus, which will allow utility to read meters by drive-by, using special handheld reading devices. Both LoRaWAN and Wireless M-Bus communication channels will work simultaneously. In other words, water consumption data will be read out by drive-by / walk-by if the Lorawan signal is not available.
