How to improve energy efficiency using smart water metering?

There is a shortage of life-giving resources all over the world. According to the UN, more than 1 billion people on Earth (or 18% of the population) lack access to clean potable water.

At the same time, the most paradoxical thing is the fact that next to this there are countless cases of excessive water consumption, careless attitude towards this resource and examples of its theft.

In different cities of the world, the amount of water loss in water supply systems varies significantly depending on the level of equipment of these systems with modern water consumption metering devices (water meters). In the most efficiently managed water supply systems in Western Europe and North America, water losses range 4–6%, while the average for developed countries is within 15%. At the same time, the level of water losses in the public water supply of Eastern European countries still remains quite high. According to available data, it accounts for an average of 18–27% of total water consumption, and in some countries and cities losses reach 40%.

How to solve this important problem? And what is the cost of water for consumers?

Most of the cost of water on your water bill is the cost of the electrical energy it costs the utility to pump it to customers. According to a report by ABB Company, more than 4% of all energy produced in the world is spent on the production/purchase of water and, accordingly, wastewater.

Consequently, reducing water losses in the network will lead to increased efficiency of energy consumption for pumping the water. As an additional benefit, we can note the reduction in the amount of CO2 generated in the process of generating electrical energy for lost (unrecorded) water in the supply system.

As a solution, ADD Grup offers the use of smart ultrasonic water meters on a national and global scale. Smart water metering can quickly eliminate losses in the domestic sector due to leaks inside apartments or private houses, theft, non-payment or incorrect billing.

It should be noted that smart water metering is currently widely used in most countries of the world. This works especially effectively in countries with low water resources.

According to independent experts, of the total losses in the supply system, half are losses from the private segment (residential consumers). These losses are generated due to water leaks in the houses of the building’s residents; pipe rupture; non-payment of bills; incorrect metering, as well as theft of water from the supply system.

And all these problems can be minimized with the help of smart metering! By avoiding unnecessary water losses, we save electrical energy, which means we save the ecosystem from wasteful and useless spending.
