A new level of accuracy: ADDRA changes the approach to metering and loss control

Every year, around 126 billion cubic metres of water are lost worldwide, accounting on average for 30% of produced water that does not generate revenue for water utilities. These losses, known as Non-Revenue Water (NRW), are a significant challenge for modern water infrastructure.

Against the backdrop of growing water consumption, limited resources and increasingly frequent periods of drought, effective water resource management is becoming particularly important. For water utilities, this means the need not only to accurately measure consumption volumes, but also to promptly identify anomalies in network operation.

Often, information about problems in the water supply system arrives with a delay, only after consumption volumes have already started to change.

Traditional mechanical meters only record the volume of water that has passed through them. However, this data alone does not always make it possible to understand what is happening with the flow.

ADDRA smart water metering solution uses multi-sensor technology that analyses not only the volume, but also the characteristics of the water flow. This allows the meter, directly at the metering point, to distinguish normal water circulation from potential anomalies. Thus, ADDRA generates a signal about a possible problem before it leads to significant losses.

ADDRA identifies two key scenarios:

  • LEAK alarm — a possible leak if water continues to flow without stopping for several hours;
  • BURST alarm — a possible burst if the water flow remains constantly high for more than 30 minutes.

At the same time, the multi-sensor solution remains a single mechanism for analysis.

ADDRA combines flow measurement and control through an adjustable valve.

The valve allows to:

  • automatically limit the water supply when the set daily volume is exceeded;
  • remotely or autonomously control the flow without a technical team visit;
  • regulate the flow silently.

This creates an additional level of control directly at the meter installation point.

Earlier detection of potential problems can contribute to:

  • reducing the volume of Non-Revenue Water;
  • reducing the time between the occurrence of an anomaly and the response;
  • reducing emergency costs and potential damage to third parties;
  • improving the accuracy of data for network analysis and water balance;
  • creating a more reliable basis for management and tariff decisions.

ADDRA also supports MultiRAT, combining several communication technologies in one device: NB-IoT, LoRaWAN and Wireless M-Bus.

This makes it possible to adapt the solution to different communication infrastructures and gradually develop the smart metering system without being tied to a single technology.

For water utilities, this means greater flexibility when modernising existing infrastructure and implementing new projects.

The development of ADDRA continues. One of the directions of the product roadmap is a multi-sensor Non-Revenue Water solution, which will expand the possibilities for data management and loss control.
