Effective water resource management requires not only accurate consumption measurement but also stable access to data throughout the entire lifecycle of metering equipment. For water utilities, this is especially important when managing Non-Revenue Water (NRW) β water that enters the system but does not generate revenue for the operator.
One of the factors affecting the continuous operation of a smart meter is the service life of its power source. In traditional water meters, the built-in battery is typically designed to last around 10β12 years. However, its actual service life may depend on the operating conditions: as the volume of transmitted data and communication frequency increase, energy consumption also rises, which may shorten battery life.
ADDRA is equipped with a replaceable external battery, which makes it possible to extend the meterβs service life without replacing the device itself. When the external battery reaches the end of its service life, it can be replaced separately β simply by installing a new battery. The meter itself continues to operate normally.
This approach is particularly important for systems designed for long-term operation. Instead of replacing a functioning water meter, the operator can replace only the power source, preserving the installed equipment and metering infrastructure. This reduces costs associated with purchasing, removing and installing new meters, while also simplifying long-term maintenance planning.
To reduce NRW, water utilities need reliable consumption data and the ability to regularly analyse changes across the network. The longer metering equipment remains operational and capable of transmitting data, the more consistently operators can monitor consumption and identify deviations.
The replaceable external battery supports this continuity. Even after the initial power source reaches the end of its service life, the meter can continue functioning by installing a new external battery. This makes it possible to use the same water meter for a longer period, without tying its service life to that of a single battery.
As a result, a long equipment lifecycle, stable data availability and the ability to monitor consumption in a timely manner become part of an integrated approach to water resource management and water loss reduction.
For operators, this means a more predictable equipment lifecycle, flexible maintenance and the ability to keep the metering system operational for many years without the need for premature replacement of the meter itself.
