In the world of smart meters, autonomous power remains one of the most vulnerable points. Even with a declared battery life of 15–20 years, in practice, this period can be significantly reduced due to extreme temperatures, high humidity, voltage surges, or manufacturing defects. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that battery failure leads to customer complaints, data transmission disruptions, unplanned technician visits, and additional equipment replacement costs. Even with a warranty, the loss of customer trust and rising expenses remain critical issues.
Understanding the scale of this challenge, ADD GRUP has developed the Intelligent Power Supply — an intelligent power architecture designed to enhance the reliability and adaptability of meters under a wide range of operating conditions. Unlike traditional built-in power sources, the Intelligent Power Supply is a comprehensive solution combining internal and external modules capable of ensuring stable device operation even under non-standard loads or increased energy consumption.
The standard configuration uses an internal power source based on C-type batteries. The main battery block (C1) ensures full meter functionality throughout its service life. Thanks to energy-efficient architecture and intelligent power management, in some configurations the battery life can reach up to 30 years — significantly exceeding industry standards. If the main battery is depleted, a backup battery (½ AA) is activated, allowing the meter to continue measurements, display operation, and NFC interface use. The only limitation is the temporary WAN connection interruption. However, full control is maintained, allowing prompt reaction and avoiding failure. An integrated super pulse capacitor (SPC) additionally supports short-term high-energy operations such as valve control. For ADR models, an additional C2 battery can be installed in parallel to the main one, significantly increasing total energy capacity and extending maintenance-free operation.
If the project requires intensive data transmission, additional functionality, or resilience in harsh climates, the Intelligent Power Supply allows connection of an external removable power bank. It can be installed at any stage of the meter’s life cycle — either during assembly or in operation. Replacing the external source does not require disassembly of the meter and does not compromise the casing’s sealing, which is especially important for utilities aiming to minimize technical interventions in installed infrastructure.
Thus, the Intelligent Power Supply is not just a power system, but a flexible technological platform enabling the transition from reactive maintenance to predictive resource management. It ensures continuous measurements, minimizes the risk of malfunctions, and simplifies technical planning. For end users, this means confidence in stable resource delivery and no unexpected shutdowns. For companies, it brings reduced operating costs, fewer incidents, and no need for mass equipment replacement in case of power failure.
The market is already responding to these challenges: more and more tenders include specific requirements for power systems, service life, redundancy, and replacement options. But ADD GRUP goes further. We offer not just a set of batteries — we create an intelligent, scalable, and adaptive energy platform integrated into the smart meter ecosystem. Intelligent Power Supply is a step forward in building reliable, resilient, and flexible next-generation AMI systems.
