Reducing Non-Revenue Water requires not only accurate consumption measurement, but also stable access to data from metering devices. In practice, data transmission itself can become one of the weak links of the system: wireless communication quality depends on building density, building characteristics, natural obstacles and network load.
In ADDRA solution, this challenge is addressed with MultiRAT technology, which provides flexible selection of the wireless communication channel depending on operating conditions.
MultiRAT: flexible connectivity for different operating conditions
MultiRAT was developed as a response to one of the key challenges of remote monitoring unstable and unpredictable availability of wireless connectivity in different regions and even within the same area.
The signal may weaken or disappear due to dense development, building materials that cause signal shielding, natural obstacles or network congestion. In such conditions, relying on only one communication technology can limit the capabilities of a smart metering system.
MultiRAT supports three wireless communication channels: NB-IoT, LoRaWAN and Wireless M-Bus. The communication technologies do not operate in parallel: the device switches from one channel to another depending on the configured scenario and operating conditions.
This approach makes it possible to adapt communication to the characteristics of a specific area and maintain data transmission from the meter under different conditions.
At the core of the solution: ADDRA ultrasonic water meter with support for NB-IoT, LoRaWAN and Wireless M-Bus.
MultiRAT makes it possible to use different communication technologies depending on operating conditions, providing flexibility when deploying smart metering across different territories.
How MultiRAT works: if the water meter uses NB-IoT as its primary communication channel and is unable to send data due to poor connectivity, after several unsuccessful attempts it switches to the LoRaWAN communication channel and sends the data through it.
At the same time, ADDRA functionality goes beyond measuring and transmitting consumption data.
In the context of reducing Non-Revenue Water, this creates a more flexible foundation for the development of smart metering and water resource management.
We invite you to visit ADD GRUP stand at Enlit Europe 2026, which will take place on 10–12 November 2026 in Vienna, Austria.
At stand B.C100, you can learn more about ADD GRUP solutions for smart water metering, including ADDRA and MultiRAT, and discuss opportunities for their application to improve the efficiency of water resource management.
